Visiting the salt flat is one of the easiest excursions in the Atacama Desert for families. You do not need to hike steep trails or face extreme elevations.
Is the altitude safe for children?
The Salar de Atacama sits at roughly 2,300 to 2,400 meters (7,500 - 7,900 feet) above sea level. This is generally safe for most children.
Unlike the nearby Altiplanic Lagoons (4,200 meters), the salt flat is at a lower elevation. Children rarely experience severe altitude sickness here. However, keep them hydrated with a reusable water bottle and monitor them.
Is Laguna Chaxa easy for kids to walk?
Yes, Laguna Chaxa features marked walking paths through the salt crust. These trails are flat and easy to navigate.
You will need about one hour to walk the paths. Visitors must strictly stay on the marked trails to protect the fragile crust and nesting grounds.
Sturdy closed-toe shoes are essential. The salt polygons are jagged and sharp.

Can kids see the flamingos easily?
Kids can see flamingos from the trails, but the birds are often distant. A camera with a zoom lens helps.
The salt flat is home to three flamingo species: the Andean, Chilean, and James's flamingos. Do not let children approach, feed, or make loud noises around the birds.
Stop by the Information Center first. The displays explain how to identify each distinct species.
What should children wear to the salt flats?
Dress kids in layers. Temperatures swing wildly between intense midday heat and freezing evening cold.
Pack high SPF sunscreen, SPF lip balm, wide-brimmed hats, and polarized sunglasses to block the blinding salt glare.
Bring a windbreaker or insulated jacket, especially if you stay for sunset. Temperatures drop rapidly as soon as the sun goes down.

How much does entry cost for families?
Adult entry to Laguna Chaxa generally costs 8,000 to 12,000 CLP. Children often have discounted or free entry.
You must secure digital entry tickets online before arriving. Gate attendants do not accept cash and routinely turn away families without pre-booked tickets.
Can we float in the lagoons with kids?
Floating in Laguna Cejar is popular, but the extreme salt content can irritate young skin.
The water is hyper-saline. If salt water gets in a child's eyes, it causes intense stinging.
On-site showers are available to wash off the thick salt crust immediately after swimming. Check tour age limits before booking.
